Living for others

Philippians 2:3,4 says: “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” In context the passage is dealing with relationships between fellow Christians, but we should have this attitude toward others in general. Jesus as our brother.

Jesus said in Mark 3:35: “For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.” Imagine, Jesus, who is deity on equal footing with God as the Word of God and His son, cares enough for those of us who strive to do the will of God to consider us His closest relatives and part of His immediate family. This is not to encourage us to revere Him less, but to encourage us to love Him as a brother and not just an unseen deity. Continue reading

God as our Father

New Year

This is the last day of 2015! As we look back and reflect on the year that is passed and look forward with anticipation to the New Year, we should resolve to serve our Lord and Savior even better in the future than we have in the past. Perhaps we don’t attend services as often as we should or maybe have failed to mention our Lord to others when the opportunity arises on every occasion. Perhaps we haven’t given of ourselves or our means to help others as often as we should or failed our Lord in other ways. We can only resolve to do better in the future than we have done in the past. Survival

When I was a young man, a well meaning older gentleman once gave me some unsolicited advice. He could probably see that I was thrashing about looking for the meaning of life and perhaps wondering just “what it is all about.” He said “Son, life is all about survival,” and he left it at that without elaborating. I have come to find that this is true on a spiritual level as well as the day to day working to have the things needed in this life. Continue reading
