Watch and Pray

After praying fervently the night He was betrayed, Jesus returned to where His apostles were and found them sleeping. He said to them: “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41). He might say the same to us as we do not want to be sleeping our way through life but instead be ever diligent to be on the lookout for temptation and to pray for the strength to overcome it in our lives. It can often be said of us that our spirit is willing to do what is right in all things, but often our flesh is weak when we are tempted to do otherwise. Continue reading

Modern Idolatry

Image result for modern idolatry

How does one define idolatry or the worship of idols in these modern times? The Jews, during the times of the prophets and judges, were often guilty of falling down to worship the gods of the people they had displaced from the land of Israel. They would make idols out of wood, stone or precious metals and prefer them over the worship of God, who had delivered them from Egyptian bondage and given them the land they inhabited. While this type of idol worship is not prevalent in the world today, at least not in our society, we may be just as guilty as they were in ancient times of putting other gods before God. Speaking the Truth In Love

Image result for Ephesians 4:14,15

Ephesians 4:14,15 says: “that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ.” This is the stability that can be found in following the scriptures and applying them to our lives. We should  no be longer tossed to and fro with the fleeting philosophies of men, but be well grounded in the truth as a firm foundation in our lives. The word speaking here means professing the truth and we do this not only verbally, but by living the truth in our lives. Continue reading

Spiritual vs. Carnal

Image result for Romans 8:1-17

Read Romans 8:1-17. It seems clear from these verses that to be carnal is to live according to the flesh while the alternative is to be Spiritual or live according to the Spirit. If we regard the things of this life as all important we are living according to the flesh, but if we regard the things of Christ as our priority we are living according to the Spirit. The Spirit of God tells us many things that we are to apply to our lives and live by and they all can be found in scripture, which is how God revealed His will to the human family  through His Holy Spirit. We are to walk in this life according to these things of the Spirit and not according to the things that our fleshly existence in this life  encourage us to walk. Continue reading
