What to Fear

There is so much evil in the world and so much going on that it would scare anyone, not to mention the people who are living in war-torn areas of the world or in refuge camps or even in areas of this country that have been devastated by severe weather or crazed gunmen and the like. What about people living in the poorest regions of the world who can’t get enough to eat or can’t afford even the basic necessities of life.

Looking at the news and seeing all that goes on in the world could cause most anyone to lose heart and be terrified to just carry on and live day to day.It is a great comfort to be able to turn to the scriptures and see what God has to say about it and I often wonder how anyone lives in this world without the comfort of God and His word in their daily lives (Romans 15:4). What have we to fear in this life, if we have done and are doing what God requires of us.

We should not fear man or the things he can do to us, but rather fear God who holds our eternal destiny in His hands (Matthew 10:28). Romans 8:31 says “If God be for us, who can be against us?” If we stand for the truth and live a godly life, as He tells us how we can in His word, we must not fear what man can do to us, though our suffering may be great in this life.

Rather, we must fear God and keep His commandments (Ecclesiastes  12:13) and He will be with us (Psalms 5:12; Psalms 23). Man can do nothing to us beyond destroying the physical body or causing us to suffer, so what have we to really fear from him.

The soul is eternal and will live on after the suffering of this life is over, so we should really pay attention to the things of God and know that the suffering of this world is only temporary. It is how we react to or handle the things of this life that will determine how we will spend eternity.

If we suffer as Jesus suffered (Isaiah 53:7), in silence with no self-righteous outbursts or retaliatory actions, we will be doing what God would have us do (Matthew 5:39). We should not fear the things that happen in this world, but rather fear God and do His will and He will be with us helping us endure anything we have to suffer in this life. What greater comfort can there be than to know that we are right with God and that He will one day take us to live with Him for eternity.

We should keep this promise of eternal life ever in the forefront of our minds as our greatest hope and goal so that we will be mindful to live for God and do His will to the best of our ability. Solomon said in Ecclesiastes that fearing God and keeping His commandments is the whole duty of man. There is nothing else.

If you study Ecclesiastes you will see that even to have everything in this life, including riches and the opportunity to try everything and do whatever one may desire, is not enough to satisfy the needs of man. Only God can fully satisfy the soul  (Luke 12:16-21) and no matter what our station is in life we can be rich toward God if we will but make the effort to study His word and do His will as we find it in the scriptures

. We must place God above all things: revere and obey Him above all else to receive the benefits of serving Him. If we put Him first in our lives we will learn not to live in fear of what might happen, but rather to live each moment to the glory of God knowing that nothing can happen to us that God does not allow to happen for the betterment of our soul and the ultimate goal of eternal life with Him.

May God bless and keep you until next time.
