Putting God first

In the busy hustle and bustle of daily living it is often easy to forget God and with the myriad of things we have to deal with in our lives it is not always easy to keep our priorities straight. If we learn to put God and our service to Him first and make it top priority, we find that everything falls into place. We find that with God first everything has more meaning and purpose and we can live fuller, happier lives as a result.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:31-33: ” Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

If we learn to put God first in this way, making His kingdom and living a righteous life, as defined by God, our number one priority, we do not have to struggle overmuch with the material things of life because God will see fit that our needs are met if we do our part. He will see that we have the job we need, for example, not necessarily to provide everything we might want, but to provide everything we need.

Our emphasis in life should not be in the day to day struggle to meet our material needs but in the things we need spiritually and what God would have us do in every situation that arises in our lives. You may say that God could not possibly provide an answer to everything that arises in our lives, but you will find as you study the scriptures and apply them to your life, that the very attitudes and approach to situations that result will provide the way that you may meet each problem and overcome it in the way God would have you do.

There is a popular phrase that we can keep in mind as we face the problems of life that sums up what should be our attitude: “What would Jesus do?” As we learn more and more of God’s word and continue to grow spiritually, we will find it easier to answer this question each time we need to and our lives will grow more and more in line with how God would have us live. Don’t expect perfection, especially at first, but as we grow and approach each situation with this question, it gets easier to stay on the road that God would have us travel.

This is how we put God first in our lives, by studying and doing the will of our Father in heaven and of Jesus, whose will does not differ from God’s in the slightest way. Jesus has always, since time without beginning, been the Word of God (John 1:1). So, to follow Jesus as closely as we can in all things, is to do the will of God as surely as God said it Himself, which He did through the Holy Spirit.

God also inspired many other to speak His will through the Holy Spirit, most notably the Apostles and through the scriptures they (and He) still speak today. We should thus learn to follow the commands and inferences of all Holy Spirit inspired scripture, if we are to put God and His righteousness first in our lives. This is what life is all about, as Jesus showed us by His life on this earth: to do the will of God and keep His commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13,14).

May God bless and keep you until next time.
